ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW RESEARCH GROUP (VAST)

11/21/2013

Our group has just received the 1st endowment to kick start our new group. Although the amount is not much (28k), but let us try to maximize the use of the grant for our group's KPI  with the hope that next year we will get more.

For a start, I am planning to organize a strategic planning workshop (26 Nov 2013), followed by two days publication workshop (27-28 Nov 2013) at Equatorial Hotel. (Sorry there is a change in the tentative dates due to several overlapping programme at PPU and holiday as well as to give members more time to prepare manuscripts). Hope the dares are ok for all members.

1. For the planning workshop, I hope Prof Sobri and Prof Zawiyah will be willing to share with us their experience at their respective faculty on how to plan strategically to steer our group to become a competitive group in term of KPIs (especially publication in high impact journals)  and contribution to society.  We will reserve two slots for Prof Sobri and Prof Zawiyah in the morning followed by our group meeting/discussion. If we can finished the planning agenda in the morning, we will start working on our  manuscripts in the afternoon.

2. For the publication workshop, the agenda will be rather free style. You can bring along your GRAs/RAs/postgraduate students (preferably with manuscripts) and help them to refine their manuscripts. But for members who will be bringing GRA/RA/Postgrads, please inform me ASAP the number for the purpose of budgeting and seminar room booking.

- Alternatively, we can help each other to review each other members manuscripts and refine our manuscripts and hope that our  expert members (Prof Sobri, Prof Zawiyah and Prof Faridah)  will be willing to review some of our members manuscripts too.
- Sorry there is a change in the earlier plan too. Initially I thought of inviting a prominent researcher in social science, Dr Steven Krauss from UPM to give some insights from the social science area but he is not available most of the time this year. But  then we already have several experts in our groups and  we can help to review each other's manuscripts too. Insyaallah I can share some of some of my limited experience too....

3. Future plan. insyaallah we will have a proposal writing workshop (ERGS) in Dec.

Hope everyone can block the dates for our planned workshops and please bring along several manuscripts. To maximize the workshops, hope VAST members/your RAs can identify your targeted journals as well as bringing along the journal's format and samples of published papers.

Thank you.

Best wishes,

Latifah
